The demand for calcium oxide used in agriculture is particularly high in the Alentejo and Ribatejo regions, where soil acidity management is critical for maintaining vineyard and olive grove productivity.
In the manufacturing sector, the transition toward high-precision industrial processes has increased the reliance on lime oxide. Local factories are shifting away from raw limestone toward refined chemical agents to ensure consistency in pH control and chemical synthesis, reflecting a broader European trend toward stringent quality standardization.
Despite the availability of local quarries, the need for specialized lime quicklime with specific particle size distributions remains a challenge. This has led to a strategic import-export balance where high-performance processed minerals are integrated into Portugal's infrastructure and construction projects to combat the corrosive effects of Atlantic salt air.
