Ghana's non-metallic mineral sector is currently characterized by a heavy reliance on imports for high-grade lime oxide. While the country possesses significant limestone deposits, the capacity for high-temperature calcination is limited, leading to a gap in the supply of reactive lime for gold and bauxite processing.
In the agricultural belt, there is an increasing demand for calcium oxide used in agriculture to combat soil acidification caused by heavy tropical rainfall. This environmental factor makes the consistent supply of pH regulators critical for maintaining cocoa and oil palm yields.
Furthermore, the manufacturing sector in Accra and Kumasi is transitioning toward more standardized chemical inputs. The shift from raw crushed limestone to processed lime quicklime indicates a growing maturity in local industrial standards and a need for higher purity levels.
